Fight Corruption and State Capture
We will not let up in the fight against corruption and state capture.
The battle to root out corruption and strengthen the rule of law can succeed only it is taken on by the whole of society. We need to work together.
We therefore welcome the work of the joint government and civil society working group charged with developing a national anti-corruption strategy and implementation plan, which is close to completion. We plan to launch the strategy by mid-year.
The Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture is continuing its critical work with the support of government and other institutions. So far, the Commission has convened for 190 days, with 27,000 pages of evidence transcripts recorded and more than 450,000 pages of exhibits.
As part of government’s anti-corruption efforts, the National Treasury has allocated an additional R2.4 billion for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Hawks. This will enable the appointment of about 800 investigators and 277 prosecutors, who will assist with clearing case backlogs, including those emanating from the Zondo Commission.
